Keep Moving Salinas

Take a break and move your legs with an urban walk

through Salinas City Center.

BLUE ZONES PROJECT MONTEREY COUNTY, IN COLLABORATION WITH SALINAS CITY CENTER,

WELCOMES YOU TO JOIN US FOR A WALK!

Call up your walking group, gather your coworkers, or grab your four-legged walking pal and head out for a stroll through Salinas City Center. Blue Zones Project Monterey County in partnership with Salinas City Center, have conveniently placed arrows throughout the downtown area, primarily on Main St. through Oldtown, to create an urban one-mile walking loop.

Just follow the blue arrows on the ground or the orange path marked on the below map.

The route will take you underneath the new Downtown Salinas Rotary Arch, past the Taylor Building and Steinbeck Center, along Gabilan and Monterey Street, through Mid-town Lane and past several of our locally owned shops, businesses and restaurants. The goal is to encourage our residents and downtown business community to get outdoors and move naturally while enjoying the recently revitalized downtown area.

Living an active life, moving naturally, has proven to extend longevity. Almost half of Monterey County adults have prediabetes and about 2/3 of Monterey County residents are overweight or obese. Taking simple steps to eating healthy and being more active can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by half.

With this new walking path, we are hopeful more people will feel inspired to have that morning coffee while moving through Salinas City Center or to walk and talk during their lunch break with coworkers.

Moai (pronounced moh-eye) is a concept from Okinawa, Japan that means coming together for a common purpose. Walking Moais encourages social support while adding the extra emotional and physical benefits of walking. It’s an active timeout with friends, coworkers, neighbors, and others who share similar interests. Move naturally by taking an active timeout in Downtown Salinas.

#MeetMeAtTheAch and together… We walk! We talk! We thrive!

Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to build environment, policy, and social networks, enabling residents to live longer, happier lives with lower rates of chronic disease. Through an innovative sponsorship, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS), Taylor Farms, and Montage Health brought Blue Zones Project to Monterey County in 2018. The work initially began in Salinas is now expanding to the Monterey Peninsula and areas of South County.
